Fluoranthene is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon that has been shown to bind to the DNA of murine sarcoma virus. Fluoranthene also inhibits the production of phenanthrene in rat liver microsomes. This compound has been found to be stable and does not undergo any chemical reactions, even at high temperatures. Fluoranthene is used for wastewater treatment and can be incorporated into a nutrient solution for use in tissue culture media. It can also be used as a skeletonizing agent for electron microscopy.
