2-Fluoro-4-methylbenzoic acid is a fluorinated benzoic acid derivative that is used in the industrial production of bexarotene. 2-Fluoro-4-methylbenzoic acid can be synthesized from 2,4-dichlorobenzoic acid and chlorine or by diazotization with sodium nitrite and potassium nitrate. It has been investigated for use as an insecticide, but it is not currently registered for this use due to its high toxicity to mammals. The insecticidal activity of 2-fluoro-4-methylbenzoic acid may be due to inhibition of the synthesis of retinoid (vitamin A) in insects. The molecule also has nucleophilic properties that allow it to act as a substitute for carboxylate groups on proteins, making them unavailable for reactions catalyzed by enzymes such as aminopeptidase and protease.
