4-Fluoro-2-methylphenol is a chemical that has been used as a preservative in industrial applications, such as textile treatments and chemical products. It also has been used as an antimicrobial agent in wastewater treatment plants. 4-Fluoro-2-methylphenol is active against Gram negative bacteria, but not Gram positive bacteria. In addition, it is more reactive with amines than with phenols. When 4-fluoro-2-methylphenol reacts with amines, it forms an intermediate compound called fluoroethylamine. The fluoroethylamine is then hydrolyzed by hydrogen peroxide to form the final product of fluoroacetic acid and methylamine. 4-Fluoro-2-methylphenol also produces reactive oxygen species that may be responsible for its antimicrobial activity.
