2'-Fluoro-5'-nitroacetophenone is a reactive intermediate that is used in the Friedel-Crafts acylation reaction. It is prepared by the reaction of 2-chloroethanal with trifluoroacetic anhydride in the presence of a base. The product obtained from this reaction is then reacted with an aromatic aldehyde in the presence of an acid catalyst to form the desired Friedel-Crafts acylation product, which may be isolated and purified by fractional distillation. This intermediate has been shown to have high reactivity towards nucleophiles such as chlorine, resulting in rapid elimination reactions. The elimination reactions are labile and must be performed under relatively mild conditions, such as at room temperature or below.
