Friedelin is a natural compound that has been isolated from the leaves of the Eucalyptus citriodora. It inhibits bacterial growth, which may be due to its inhibitory properties. Friedelin also possesses significant cytotoxicity in vitro and has been shown to have a dose-dependent effect on the cell cycle in cultured human erythrocytes. Friedelin has a strong antibacterial effect against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus and Clostridium perfringens, but is less effective against Gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli. Friedelin was not found to be toxic at concentrations up to 500 µg/mL for 24 hours in vitro or up to 1 mg/kg body weight per day for 10 days in vivo. In addition, friedelin does not affect the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes or interfere with other drugs.
