It has been shown to induce apoptosis in cultured cells by upregulating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and increasing mitochondrial membrane permeability, as well as inhibiting cellular physiology. 4-Fluoro-2-methoxyphenol also inhibits the production of ATP and may be toxic to cells by interfering with dinucleotide phosphate.
