It also reacts with formazans, which are redox indicators that are formed when bacteria are metabolized by aerobic conditions. The presence of these formazans can be detected using a simple colorimetric assay on tissues or bovine serum. 3-Formylphenoxyacetic acid is not active against methicillin-resistant staphylococci, but it works well against heterologous strains such as Salmonella typhimurium and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
