It is used in the treatment of some autoimmune diseases and heart disease. 3-(2-Furyl)acrylic acid inhibits the enzyme lipoprotein lipase, which plays a key role in the absorption of dietary fats into the bloodstream. It has been shown to inhibit monocyte chemotactic protein 1, an inflammatory cytokine that stimulates the recruitment of macrophages at sites of inflammation and injury. 3-(2-Furyl)acrylic acid has also been shown to inhibit muscle cell proliferation, which may be due to its inhibition of protein synthesis.
