Filixic acid ABA is an extract of the dryopteris filix-mas plant, which has been shown in vitro to have antiviral and antibacterial activity against influenza virus and staphylococcus. It also inhibits neuraminidase, which is an enzyme found on the surface of influenza virus that facilitates release of new viruses from infected cells. Filixic acid ABA has been shown to inhibit the growth of S. epidermidis and other bacteria by inhibiting bacterial neuraminidase with a similar inhibitory effect as Zinc pyrithione.
