22-Fluorovitamin D3 is a synthetic analog of vitamin D3. It is made by the fluorination of vitamin D3 with trifluoride, which produces 22-fluorovitamin D3 and equilibration with sodium bicarbonate. This analog has been shown to inhibit the binding of vitamin D3 to its receptor in rat plasma and cytosol. The analog also inhibits the transport of vitamin D3 from the intestinal lumen into the body. 22-Fluorovitamin D3 has been shown to have an electronegative nature, which may be due to its ability to donate electrons in organic reactions.
