Fluoropentachloroethane is a reactive compound that reacts with water to form hydrofluoric acid and pentachloroethane. It is used in the production of other compounds, such as solvents, refrigerants and pesticides. Fluoropentachloroethane is also used as an extracting agent in organic chemistry and has been shown to be effective at removing heavy metals from contaminated water. The chemical has a vapor pressure of 1.6 mmHg at 20 degrees Celsius and a density of 1.598 g/mL, which makes it easier to transport by land or air than heavier chemicals such as tetrachloroethylene. Fluoropentachloroethane can be evaporated using diode laser technology when the temperature is above its boiling point of 65 degrees Celsius.
