Description:

2-Fluoro-2,2-dinitroethanol is a fluorinating agent used to convert alcohols and phenols into the corresponding chlorofluorocarbons. The reaction is catalyzed by methyl methacrylate and chloride in carbon tetrachloride. This compound can be prepared by reacting an alkali metal with an anion of the acid chloride, followed by treatment with dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate. 2-Fluoro-2,2-dinitroethanol can also be prepared by adding a transfer catalyst to an organic solvent containing isobutyric acid and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate.
