L-glutamic acid diethyl ester hydrochloride (GDE) is an experimental drug that inhibits the activity of glutamic acid decarboxylase, an enzyme that catalyses the production of glutamate. GDE has been shown to decrease locomotor activity in rats and to cause neuronal death in cerebellar Purkinje neurons. It also has low potency as a neurotransmitter. L-Glutamic acid diethyl ester hydrochloride has been shown to be effective against autoimmune diseases and metabolic disorders, although it did not show significant effects on pharmacokinetic properties or glutamate levels in experimental models.
