Gemifioxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are enzymes that maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA. Gemifioxacin has been shown to be useful in the treatment of acute bacterial rhinosinusitis caused by gram-positive bacteria such as Streptococcus pneumoniae and Staphylococcus aureus. This drug can cause protein oxidation and may have interactions with other drugs. Gemifloxacin is not active against gram-negative bacteria such as Escherichia coli or Klebsiella pneumoniae.
