Gentisic acid is a hydroxycinnamic acid that occurs in plants and fruits. It is found in the etoac extract of Gentiana lutea and has been shown to inhibit the growth of epidermal cells. Gentisic acid has been shown to be a potent neurotrophic factor, which enhances the survival and differentiation of neurons. It also inhibits the binding of acetylcholine receptors by acylation reactions with receptor proteins. This chemical can be used as a reagent for determining amino acids, fatty acids, and hydroxyl groups in organic compounds. Gentisic acid can also be used to synthesize other biologically active molecules such as epidermal growth factor (EGF).
