Guanidine is a metal hydroxide that has been shown to have a high affinity for human immunoglobulin. It binds to the receptor site and inhibits the protease activity of human serum. Guanidine hydrochloride (GNDH) is an ionic compound with three different crystalline forms. It can be used as a reagent in sample preparation, such as fractionation of proteins or purification of nucleotides. Guanidine hydrochloride has been shown to have conformational properties and hydrogen bonding interactions that are similar to those found in guanidine. The reaction mechanism for guanidine hydrochloride is not yet known, but it is hypothesized that it may involve a nucleophilic attack by water followed by elimination of chloride ions and formation of the guanidinium cation.
