Glutathione peroxidase is an antioxidant enzyme that protects cells from oxidative damage by converting hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. Glutathione peroxidase has been shown to prevent kidney injury by protecting the kidney cells from oxidative damage. Glutathione peroxidase activity is also reduced in people with chronic kidney disease, which may be due to the inhibition of glutathione synthesis. The expression of glutathione peroxidase in the chrysanthemum plant was studied using a cDNA clone and its rate constant was determined. This enzyme has been shown to inhibit apoptosis pathways, such as p38 MAPK and JNK/SAPK, in response to α-linolenic acid, a fatty acid found in plants. Glutathione peroxidase also binds at the substrate-binding site on some proteins and catalyzes reactions involving oxidation of substrate molecules.
