- cyclo(L-leucyl-D-phenylalanyl-L-prolyl-L-valyl-L-ornithyl-L-leucyl-D-phenylalanyl-L-prolyl-L-valyl-L-ornithyl) dihydrochloride
Gramicidin S Hydrochloride is a cyclic peptide that was originally isolated from the type strain of Bacillus brevis. It has been shown to have a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, as well as fungi, protozoa, and viruses. Gramicidin S Hydrochloride inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the hydroxyl group on the cell wall and forming an intramolecular hydrogen bond with a proton in the molecule. This causes damage to the cell wall that leads to bacterial death. Gramicidin S Hydrochloride has been used as an ophthalmic drug for eye infections caused by bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa or Staphylococcus epidermidis.
