Ginkgolide C is a natural compound that inhibits the activity of p-glycoprotein. It has been shown to inhibit the synthesis of proinflammatory mediators in human monocytes and macrophages, such as matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) activity and cytokine release. Ginkgolide C also inhibits the expression of chemokines and adhesion molecules on endothelial cells, which may be due to its inhibition of nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) activation. Ginkgolide C is an inhibitor of the MMPs that are involved in extracellular matrix degradation, including collagenases, gelatinases, stromelysins and other enzymes.
