Ginkgo biloba extract is an herbal supplement that contains flavonol glycosides. It has been shown to have antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties. Ginkgo biloba extract activates brain cells in the central nervous system, which may be due to its ability to inhibit the growth of cancer cells that are resistant to chemotherapeutic treatment. Ginkgo biloba extract also has anti-inflammatory effects and enhances the response of immune cells. This plant may be effective against cerebral vascular diseases, including stroke, Alzheimer's disease and dementia, as well as for treating certain types of cancer.
