Glycine is an amino acid that is essential for protein synthesis. It can be synthesized by the body from serine, but it may also be obtained through the diet. Glycine HCl is a salt of glycine and hydrochloric acid. In humans, glycine is necessary for many biological processes and it also has antimicrobial properties. The rate constant of glycine in human serum was determined to be 0.0022 s-1 using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The molecular weight of this compound is 79 g mol-1 and its pK a value is 9.8. Glycine HCl has been shown to have insecticidal properties against larvae of the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens. This compound also has been shown to inhibit growth of BCR-ABL kinase in cells transformed with the Philadelphia chromosome, which causes chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).
