Gossypol is a pro-apoptotic protein that binds to DNA and induces apoptosis. The binding of gossypol to DNA leads to the inhibition of transcriptional regulation, which can eventually lead to cancer. Gossypol has also been shown to be carcinogenic in animals. It has been shown to have a protective effect against certain cancers, such as prostate cancer, but it is not yet known how it does this. Gossypol is metabolized by hydrolysis of the ester group by serum esterases, leading to the formation of an active form called gossypol acetate. Gossypol acetate is able to bind with DNA and induce apoptosis in human cells, but lacks any antimicrobial activity.
