Gaultherin is a natural phenolic acid that is found in the plant genus Gaultheria. It has been used for centuries to treat skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. It also exhibits anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. For example, it has been shown to inhibit the production of eosinophil peroxidase in vitro. In addition, Gaultherin inhibits the growth of cancer cells by inhibiting tyrosinase activity and preventing cell division. The inhibition of tyrosinase may be due to its ability to inhibit the biosynthesis of L-DOPA from amino acid dopa. Gaultherin also has anti-microbial effects against Trichomonas vaginalis and Chlamydia trachomatis.
Gaultherin is a potent inhibitor of tyrosine kinases in vitro, which may be related to its anti-cancer activity against melanoma cells with activation of MAPKs (mitogen activated protein
