Ganoderic acid D is a triterpenoid that exhibits cytotoxic properties against human cervical cancer cells. Ganoderic acid D has been shown to induce autophagy, a process in which the cell breaks down and recycles its own organelles for energy. This compound also induces apoptosis by inhibiting the synthesis of proteins. Ganoderic acid D has been shown to have significant cytotoxicity against human liver cancer cells, and it inhibits cholesterol synthesis by blocking the activity of key enzymes such as 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A reductase (HMGCR) and squalene synthase. Ganoderic acid D also blocks the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). Other studies have also demonstrated that this compound has anti-inflammatory effects when combined with adjuvant therapies.
