• Description: Germanium oxide is a metal oxide that exists in two forms: germanium dioxide (GeO2) and germanium trioxide (GeO3). It is used as a model system for the study of the effects of radiation on biological systems. Optical measurements are also possible with GeO2, which allows for the study of its optical properties such as refractive index and absorption coefficient. The thermal expansion coefficient of GeO2 is greater than that of zirconium oxide or silicon dioxide.Germanium oxide can be prepared by heating germanium in an atmosphere containing oxygen at high temperature or by reacting phosphorous pentoxide with germanium at high temperature.
