Description:

2-Hydroxy-9-fluorenone is a fluorescent molecule with an aromatic hydrocarbon core and a hydroxyl group. It has been detected in the gas phase by chemical ionization mass spectrometry as a result of its formation from the reaction of fluorene with hydroxyl radicals. 2-Hydroxy-9-fluorenone has been shown to be produced by bacterial cells, and can be formed during acidification of coal tar or petroleum. It is used as an additive in plastics, resins, and dyes. 2-Hydoxy-9-fluorenone exhibits a red shift when excited with light at 366 nm, which is characteristic of aromatic molecules. The observed maximum emission wavelength was 480 nm in dichloromethane solution.
