5-Hydroxynicotinic acid is a supramolecular compound that has been shown to bind to magnesium oxide and water molecules. The redox potential of 5-hydroxynicotinic acid is higher than the one of flavin. It is also a substrate for many enzymes, such as malonic acid decarboxylase and succinic semialdehyde dehydrogenase, which catalyze the reaction between 5-hydroxynicotinic acid and its tautomer, 2-hydroxyquinoline-3-carboxylic acid. The crystal structure of 5-hydroxynicotinic acid has been determined using X-ray crystallography. This compound has also been shown to have pharmacological activities in vitro on ventricular myocardium cells, including inhibition of enzyme activity and reduction in intracellular Ca2+ concentration.
