3-Hydroxytetrahydrofuran is a compound that contains a hydroxyl group, which is a functional group that consists of an oxygen atom and two hydrogen atoms. It is the simplest alkoxy alcohol. 3-Hydroxytetrahydrofuran has the ability to form hydrogen bonds with other molecules due to its polarity. This compound can also be oxidized to form a positron and a hydroxyl radical (OH). 3-Hydroxytetrahydrofuran is found in malic acid, which is found in apples. This compound can also be produced by dehydrating glucose under high pressure and heat. 3-Hydroxytetrahydrofuran can react with phosphate groups or hydrochloric acid to produce phosphate esters or chlorinated alcohols, respectively. The reaction mechanism for this reaction is shown below:
