Hexadecylamine is a fatty acid-derived compound that has been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria in vitro. It also prevents the formation of metal carbonyls, which are reactive oxygen species that can cause oxidative damage. Hexadecylamine has been shown to be stable in water vapor and chemical environments, which makes it an ideal candidate for use as an antimicrobial agent. Hexadecylamine's structure was determined by X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy. The reaction solution used to form hexadecylamine from its precursor molecule, trifluoroacetic acid, contained copper chloride as a catalyst.
