Harpagide is a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid that inhibits the activity of Cox-2, which is an important enzyme for inflammation. Harpagide has been shown to be effective in vivo and in vitro by inhibiting the production of proinflammatory molecules such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes. This compound also inhibits apoptosis pathways by reducing mitochondrial membrane potential and triggering caspase-3 activation, leading to cancer cell death. Harpagide was isolated from a juglone extract of Agrimonia pilosa (Ajuga reptans) and purified using analytical methods. The chemical structure of harpagide has been determined to be oleanonic acid acetate.
