It binds reversibly to the XO enzyme and reverses the effect of the enzyme, thereby inhibiting the production of uric acid. 4-Hydroxy-6-mercaptopyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine does not bind to any other enzymes in the body or affect serum protein levels, which makes it an ideal drug for patients with gout who are at risk for developing renal failure. The drug has been shown to be effective in animal models and is currently undergoing clinical trials in humans.
