The HIV-1 envelope protein, gp120, is a transmembrane glycoprotein that plays a key role in the viral entry process. The gp120 protein contains the binding site for the CD4 receptor and can be cleaved by proteases to remove the membrane-spanning domain. The resulting soluble gp120 (sgp120) is an important co-receptor for HIV infection of target cells such as prostate cancer cells. The sgp120 binds to heparin sulfate proteoglycans on the surface of target cells and triggers cellular activation pathways including angiogenic factors, which induce cell proliferation and migration. This process is important for tumour growth and metastasis, inflammatory bowel disease, and other inflammatory diseases. The sgp120 has also been shown to activate pro-apoptotic proteins such as Bcl-2 family members and Bax. These proteins play a crucial role in apoptosis pathway by regulating mitochondrial membrane integrity, cytochrome c release from mitochond
