    Description:Hydroxymethyl resin is a form of polystyrene that has been modified with the addition of hydroxyl (-OH) groups. It is used in the synthesis of dyes, pharmaceuticals, and other organic compounds. Hydroxymethyl resin is used as an adsorbent for purification and extraction reactions. Hydroxymethyl resin also binds to DNA and inhibits its replication. This process can be observed in HL-60 cells treated with copper chloride or benzalkonium chloride. The binding of Hydroxymethyl resin to DNA may be due to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the -OH group on the resin and phosphate groups on the DNA backbone. Hydroxymethyl resin toxicity studies have shown that this material does not cause any significant changes in symptoms or disease progression in patients with bowel diseases. Chronic pulmonary exposure to hydroxymethyl resins may lead to lung inflammation, but it does not affect respiratory function or induce cancer formation.
