5-Hydroxy-1H,3H-benzo[de]isochromene-1,3-dione is a chiral compound and has been shown to have affinity for the carbonyl group. It has been found to react with carbonyl groups in a photophysical reaction, which leads to the red shift of its fluorescent emission spectrum. The compound can be demethylated by methyl iodide or sodium hydroxide. This is an example of a fluorescing molecule that has a phenothiazine ring system. 5-Hydroxy-1H,3H-benzo[de]isochromene-1,3-dione can be used as a solvent for acetonitrile and other organic solvents.
