Description

(+/-)-Heraclenin is a furocoumarin that is extracted from the leaves of Heracleum sphondylium. It has been shown to have antimicrobial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The optimum extraction process for (+/-)-heraclenin involves a stepwise extraction procedure, in which the plant material is first extracted with aqueous acetone and then with supercritical carbon dioxide. The chemical composition of (+/-)-heraclenin includes bergapten, imperatorin, and methoxsalen.
