2-Hydroxy-3-methylcyclopent-2-enone is a chemical species that is commonly found in Chinese herbs. It has been shown to have a number of applications, including as an ingredient in wastewater treatment, light emission, and process optimization. 2-Hydroxy-3-methylcyclopent-2-enone can be synthesized by reacting hydrochloric acid with acetone and formaldehyde. The reaction mechanism is not yet fully understood. Clinical studies show that 2-hydroxy-3 methylcyclopentane carboxylic acid has the potential to treat cancerous tumors in vitro.
