5-Hydroxyisophthalonitrile (HIPS) is a cross-coupling agent and organogelator. It can be used as an additive in drug formulations to improve the solubility of poorly soluble drugs. HIPS has been shown to inhibit HIV-1 replication and transcription by binding to the reverse transcriptase enzyme, leading to a decrease in viral load. In addition, HIPS has been shown to be effective against other viruses such as herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and cytomegalovirus (CMV). The pharmacokinetic profile of HIPS is not well understood, but it has been shown that the blood levels of HIPS increase when given with chlorides such as sodium chloride or potassium chloride. This suggests that HIPS may be transported through the cell membrane by ion channels.
