2-Hydroxycyclopent-2-enone is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3CH(OH)CH2COOH. It is a synthetic compound that is produced by the dehydration of cyclopent-2-enone. The asymmetric synthesis of 2-hydroxycyclopent-2-enone was developed in 1970 and was accomplished by using a water molecule as a chiral auxiliary. This organic compound has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on tissue culture cells, such as lymphocytic leukemia and human epidermoid carcinoma cells. 2-Hydroxycyclopent-2-enone also inhibits the growth of bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Acid catalysts are required for this reaction to proceed.
