2-(Hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol is a chemoenzymatic that is used as a cross-linker in the production of polymer films. It reacts with zirconium oxide and radiation to form a film. The hydroxyl group on the 2-position of the molecule reacts with a fatty acid to create a cross-link. The particles are then heated to produce polymer chains. This process is known as thermal expansion polymerization. The polycarboxylic acid groups on the 2-(hydroxymethyl)-1,3-propanediol molecules act as substrates for the production of particle films and are also used in asymmetric synthesis reactions.
