16-Hexadecanolide is a natural product derived from the acetate extract of the leaves of the tree, Pongamia pinnata. This compound has been shown to exhibit genotoxic activity in vitro and in vivo. 16-Hexadecanolide is also toxic to cells in culture and induces apoptosis by binding to DNA and causing strand breaks. The structure of 16-hexadecanolide resembles that of macrolactones, which are known as potent receptor-binding molecules. It has been shown to inhibit enzyme activities through competitive inhibition and it is also an analytical method for determining the purity of a sample.
