A reversible and competitive inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) that is approved for the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. It is also an allosteric modulator of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR). Activation of nAChR along with upregulation of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2 prevents apoptosis and therefore provides neuroprotection.
