Product Information
14a-Hydroxycortisol is a steroid that has been found to be produced by many bacteria. It can be isolated from the bacterium Micrococcus lysodeikticus. The molecule is also present in the urine of patients with bacterial infections, such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae. The enzymatic system responsible for its production is unknown, although it may be related to the reductive transformation of steroids or hydrolysis of cholesterol. 14a-Hydroxycortisol has been shown to have antibiotic properties against certain microorganisms, including yeast, fungi, and some bacteria. It inhibits microbial growth by binding to DNA and preventing RNA synthesis.
