Hydrobromic acid is a strong acid that is a potent inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase, which is an enzyme required for the breakdown of acetylcholine. It also has been shown to inhibit the activity of dipeptidyl-peptidase IV (DPP-IV). Hydrobromic acid can be used in analytical methods as it can be detected by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. This compound has been shown to have a cholinergic effect and to act as a methyltransferase inhibitor. It also has been shown to be effective in pharmacological treatment of congestive heart failure and may act through the epidermal growth factor receptor or cell factor.
