7S-Heliotrine is a natural toxin that is found in plants and has regulatory properties. It is a toxin that has been shown to be genotoxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic in animal studies. 7S-Heliotrine has been shown to be toxic to the liver cells of rats and mice at high doses. In animals, this toxin is metabolized by the liver into retronecine, which then undergoes further metabolism to form lasiocarpine, a cytotoxic metabolite which causes micronuclei in human lymphocytes. The toxicity of 7S-Heliotrine may be due to its ability to react with oxidative molecules such as O2 and NO3.
