5-Hydroxyaloin A is a ruthenium complex that has been shown to have significant anti-inflammatory activity. It induces the biosynthesis of prostaglandins, which are responsible for the inflammatory response. It also inhibits cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase enzymes, as well as other enzymes involved in the inflammatory process. 5-Hydroxyaloin A was found to be more potent than aspirin and ibuprofen in its ability to inhibit inflammation in a mouse model.
5-Hydroxyaloin A is an odorless, white crystalline substance with a molecular weight of 296.3 daltons. The compound is soluble in water and methanol, but insoluble in ether and chloroform. The compound was originally isolated from an exudate from an unidentified plant species from China.
