Hexachloro-1,3-butadiene is a reactive chlorinated hydrocarbon that has been shown to damage nuclear DNA. This compound is used as an intermediate in the production of other chemicals as well as in analytical methods. The chronic oral toxicity of hexachloro-1,3-butadiene has been studied extensively and found to be toxic to many organs. Hexachloro-1,3-butadiene is also genotoxic and can cause mutations in cells. Hexachloro-1,3-butadiene reacts with hydrogen fluoride to form a hexafluoroacetyl chloride which can react with water to form hydrochloric acid or hydrogen fluoride. In wastewater treatment, hexachloro-1,3-butadiene can react with nutrient solutions and long term toxicity studies have been done on this compound. It has also been shown to have ecological effects on algae and earthworms due to its ability to inhibit photosynthesis and reduce
