N-(2-Hydroxyethyl)formamide (HEFA) is a compound that is used in organic chemistry. It is a solvent for polymers and has been shown to be useful for the polymerization of vinyl alcohols. This reaction occurs by cleavage of a C-N bond with the formation of hydrogen gas and an amine product. The hydrogen bond between the nitrogen atom and the hydroxyl group in the formamide molecule stabilizes this chemical reaction, which can be observed under a microscope. HEFA has also been used as an analytical reagent, allowing for determination of molecular weight and mass spectrometric identification of molecules. Reaction rates are increased when they are carried out in the presence of organic acids such as acetic acid or formic acid. In addition, N-(2-hydroxyethyl)formamide can act as an amine base, disrupting other amines in its vicinity and creating new chemical compounds.
