2,5-Hexanedione is an organic compound that is used in the synthesis of polymers. It has been shown to have a high toxicity in experimental models and can cause liver damage, kidney damage, and death in rats. 2,5-Hexanedione binds to receptors on cell membranes and causes the release of inflammatory mediators such as histamine and leukotrienes. This leads to inflammation and tissue damage. The effect is dose dependent and occurs when 2,5-hexanedione concentrations are greater than or equal to 25 ppm. 2,5-Hexanedione also inhibits mitochondrial membrane potential, which may be related to its antiinflammatory activity.
