Description:4-Hydroxy estrone is a metabolite of estrone. It has been shown to have genotoxic activity, which is thought to be due to its ability to form DNA adducts. 4-Hydroxy estrone has also been found to cause cancer in rat liver microsomes and body mass index in female rats. 4-Hydroxy estrone can be found in the environment as a result of wastewater treatment, where it reacts with triclosan and other compounds. 4-Hydroxy estrone has been shown to inhibit the activity of enzymes such as cytochrome P450 and aromatase that are involved in estrogen metabolism. Tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) stimulates the production of this compound, which is thought to play an important role in the development of obesity-related cancers.
