Hydroxymethyl clenbuterol is a reactive form of clenbuterol. It has been used as an analytical method for the detection of clenbuterol in urine samples. The matrix effect can be reduced by using hydroxymethyl clenbuterol, which reacts with the amido group on the sample. Hydroxymethyl clenbuterol can also be detected in a shorter time than other forms of clenbuterol because it is more degradable and less stable. This form also reacts to β-adrenergic receptors, so it may be used to detect plant toxins that are similar to these receptors.
